Describe advantages and disadvantages for the digital representation of data
Term
Explanation
The need for quality data
Accuracy
Accuracy is a major issue for digital representation of data, due to the options of transmitting and receiving data.
Mediums like the Internet that offer rapid sharing of digital data cause added requirements of team members such as moderators to ensure data accuracy.
Timeliness
With new and emerging technologies the ability for data to be constantly uploaded and updated has given the ability for data to be continually up to date, and accessed when it is required.
Accessibility
Part of the purpose of digital representation of data is to allow the users of the system the ability to access the data when they need it, accessibility involves ensuring that the user has access to the data when they require it, for example displaying data on the Internet allows world wide access of data for all its users.

Newspapers on the Internet
In Internet newspapers allow readers access news articles as viewed in a newspaper, on their computer. this technology gives newspaper publishers the ability to add extra features to their articles such as videos, extra videos etc.
Research has found that although Internet news seems far superior to printed news, that Internet news has complimented printed newspapers and in fact increased sales through using the Internet as a marketing tool.
Telephone system
Wikipedia - Digital Telephone "Digital telephonyis the use of digital electronics in the provision of digitaltelephoneservices and systems. Since the 1960s a digitalcore networkhas almost entirely replaced the oldanalogsystem, and much of theaccess networkhas also been digitized. Digital telephony was introduced to provide voice services at lower cost, but was then found to be of great value to new network services such asISDNthat could use digital facilities to transfer data speedily over telephone lines." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_telephony
The concept of facsimile is simply a device that can send exact copies of a page with text and images to another machine the be printed.
Modern day printers such as the Canon D620 combine the features of Fax, Printing and scanning. This technology uses digital transmission techniques far advancements from the original fax machine that used analogue signals to transmit over distances. http://www.capitolfax.com/fax_6.jpg http://www.computeroutlet.com.au/photocopiers_files/canon620photocopier.jpg
Media retrieval management
Media retrieval management systems integrate all of an institution's different media into a centralised system.
Media retrieval systems can come in forms to cater for Digital, analogue and digital/analogue media. Wikipedia - Digital Asset Management
Why information technology uses digital data
Digital data is becoming the emerging trend for Information Technology, this is due to the advantages it holds over the alternate ageing analogue methods
Advantages for the digital representation of data
Digital Data has several advantage over analog data, this is why the trend is becoming to switch from analog to digital data. These include:
Easier/Higher quality copying, to copy analogue data the data needs to be copied frame by frame etc. Take the analogy of a painting analogue copying would involve repainting the picture, where digital will involve copy-pasting the picture.
The above point also leads to a higher quality of digital data over analogue.
"Computer-controlled digital systems can be controlled by software, allowing new functions to be added without changing hardware. Often this can be done outside of the factory by updating the product's software. So, the product's design errors can be corrected after the product is in a customer's hands." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_electronics
Digital data saves on physical space, rather than having data stored on formats that take up lots of space such as Punch Cards etc Digital data can be stored on smaller mediums such as Flash disks, cds etc.
Disadvantages for the digital representation of data
From a transmitting and receiving sense, data represented in digital form has the disadvantages of:
Digital data can take longer to send, where analogue only needs to hold a current for an amount of time, digital needs to send a series of 1's and 0's in order to transmit the same message
Digital messages are larger than analogue
Digital data chips are more expensive than analogue
Humans are not used to processing digital data, human minds are built up to deal with analog data, due to our life's experiences
Security, digital data is transferred and updated frequently it far harder to keep secure than analogue data
"Digital representations of continuous data can never be as accurate as the original" - Pg 65 IPT by Samuel Davis
